The TAXI Art Book series produced its first book and educational supplement published by David Krut Publishing, Johannesburg in 2000 with Brenda Atkinson as the Series Editor for the first two books. The series was initiated as a partnership project with Catherine Blondeau, Director of the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), and Mirjam Asmal the Cape Town representative of Pro Helvetia - Arts Council of Switzerland, and David Krut at the instigation of Brenda Atkinson.

TAXI books and educational supplements continue to be published by David Krut Publishing, and further funding has been contributed by the Royal Netherlands Embassy, the National Arts Council of South Africa(NAC).

The focus is monographs on contemporary South African artists and the series begins to correct the lack of published documentation on contemporary South African art. The series is envisaged as a long-term, non-profit cultural investment that will provide exposure for local writers and book designers.

The educational supplement published with each book is intended to develop an active educational programme and teaching resource archive.
