TAXI ART BOOKS is a series of monographs on contemporary South African artists. Each book is accompanied by a separately published educational supplement. The series aims to extend the profile of South African artists and the visual arts, both locally and abroad, and to develop an active educational programme and teaching resource archive. The books are published by David Krut Publishing, Johannesburg and the project is supported by The French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), Johannesburg and the French Embassy, Pretoria; Pro-Helvetia - Arts Council of Switzerland, The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, Cape Town Liaison Office; The Royal Netherlands Embassy, Pretoria; The National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC) and David Krut Arts Resource. An independent advisory committee is appointed each year to select 3 artists who have created a substantial body of work, but have no monograph published on their art. A new author is commissioned to write the text for each book and the project creates opportunities for researchers, book designers and other related opportunities which were not previously available to the arts in South Africa. The project was initiated in 2000 and has become an important resource for the contemporary visual arts and arts education, and with the support of the international sponsors has been responsible for a growing awareness of the visual arts in South Africa. The TAXI Educational Supplements are created by independent arts educators and contain worksheets for art students and guidelines for teachers. They are designed specifically for broad subject integration in senior high school curricula and can be adapted for informal art training as well as tertiary institutions.
Projects coming out of TAXI Art Project The establishment of TAXI Art Project, a not-for-profit company, has allowed for the extension of activities to support the visual arts. Programmes are in development to encourage writing on the arts and to expand the local arts audience. The TAXI books are available internationally, and promotional and there are collaborations with David Krut Projects in the Chelsea Art District of New York to promote the awareness of South African art publications. BODYMAPS, an exhibition from the University of Cape Town Memory Box Project of art by women who are HIV+, is being exhibited at the UNCTAD New York Office and will travel to other museums and galleries in the USA.
