David Koloane, artist, writer, arts administrator and curator, was born in 1938 in Alexandra township, Johannesburg. He studied art at the Bill Ainslie Studios in Johannesburg and later completed a Diploma in Museum Studies at the University of London. Koloane established a reputation, both locally and internationally, as a pioneer black artist in apartheid South Africa and was a founder member of institutions promoting and supporting black talent in South Africa from the mid-1970's.

He is the co-founder and director of the Fordsburg Artists' Studios ( The Bag Factory ) and in 1997 was appointed a member of the National Arts Council of South Africa. He has been the curator of a number of international group shows and his works have featured in major exhibitions including the Venice Biennale.

In 1998, he was the recipient of the prestigious Prince Claus Fund Award.

David Koloane's work reflects the socio-political landscape of South Africa, both past abnd present. The conditions created by the apartheid system have to a large extent transfixed the human condition as the axis around which his work revolves.

Veronique Tadjo, fellow painter and writer from the Ivory Coast has written the text for this book. She is the author of many acclaimed works of fiction for adults and children, and has used her poetic skills to weave the strands of thought and theme in Koloane's work into an atmospheric text.

The author's text is in English with extracts translated into French and Dutch.

TAXI-006 also includes an introduction to the work of David Koloane by Nadine Gordimer, Nobel Prize Winner in Literature, 1991, which is translated into French and Dutch.

The book consists of 96 pages with 48 pages of colour images. Written by Veronique Tadjo, edited by Brenda Atkinson. Softcover. French / Dutch translations
