TAXI 005 : Lien Botha

Overview | Sample images | Book details | French/Français

Lien Botha is an artist living in Cape Town and working in photo-based media. Her work can be found in major collections in South africa. She completed her degree in Fine Art at the University of Cape Town in 1988 and has since worked as a commercial photographer and artist, exhibiting in South Africa and abroad.

"The artist has always preferred enigma as her point of entry. Her photographs, never things in themselves, are shifted, touched, re-contextualised. Traces rather than signs are what interest her...Light and shade rather than bold colour, fickle memory rather than received history, movement rather than stillness. Gently unsettling, her art seeks out the depth in a thing and the shifting surfaces that cloud the perceived object."

Author of cultural essays, plays, short stories and novels, Ashraf Jamal has woven an eloquent text around Botha's oeuvre, drawing on post-modern theory and poetic feeling alike. He teaches at the School of Language, Culture and Communication at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg and lives in a villlage with his wife and two daughters.

Karen Press is a South african poet who has collaborated with Lien Botha on several projects. Her published collectiosn includeBird Heart Stoning the Sea / Krotoa's Story, The Coffe Shop Poems, Echo Location. A Guide to Sea Point for residents and Visitors, and Home

For this book Lien has collaborated with Karen Press and struck up a fascinating dialogue of meaning and imagery showing Press' words flowing alongside the beautiful reproductions of Botha's work.

The book consists of 96 pages with 56 pages of colour images. Written by Ashraf Jamal with poetry by Karen Press; edited by Karen Press. Softcover. French/Dutch translations
