Lien Botha is an artist living in Cape Town and working in photo-based media. Her work can be found in major collections in South africa. She completed her degree in Fine Art at the University of Cape Town in 1988 and has since worked as a commercial photographer and artist, exhibiting in South Africa and abroad.
"The artist has always preferred enigma as her point of entry. Her photographs, never things in themselves, are shifted, touched, re-contextualised. Traces rather than signs are what interest her...Light and shade rather than bold colour, fickle memory rather than received history, movement rather than stillness. Gently unsettling, her art seeks out the depth in a thing and the shifting surfaces that cloud the perceived object."
Author of cultural essays, plays, short stories and novels, Ashraf Jamal has woven an eloquent text around Botha's oeuvre, drawing on post-modern theory and poetic feeling alike. He teaches at the School of Language, Culture and Communication at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg and lives in a villlage with his wife and two daughters.
